Lillah Meaning

Lillah is any form of charity given purely to please Allah (SWT). However, this charitable giving is provided entirely voluntarily and not like Zakat.

“O you who believe, spend of the wealth We have bestowed upon you (in Allah’s way) before the Day comes when there shall be no buying and no selling; when neither friendship nor intercession will be available.”  (Qur’an 2: 254)

You might give Lillah to help people in need, teach your children about generosity, selflessness, or even tax reasons. But when you are a Believer; your reasons for giving Sadaqah are tied to a higher purpose. Sharing your wealth with those less fortunate brings about a range of rewards and benefits you won’t see in this life.

Difference Between Lillah & Sadaqah

Lillah is considered a type of Sadaqah donation. However, a person can make this donation to a certain institution or organization, instead of giving it to individuals or people in need.

Similar to Sadaqah, it is not compulsory, and there is no minimum amount and no restriction on who can receive it.

When we do any good deed, our ultimate hope is that we gain Allah’s Love and Mercy. Because when we earn Allah’s Love and Compassion, we’re rewarded the eternity in Jannah by His Side, an everlasting home that sees no pain, no torture, no hunger, no fear, and no sadness.

Difference Between Lillah & Sadaqah

Allah (SWT) reminded us many times throughout the Quran:

“Those who spend their wealth in the Cause of Allah, and do not follow up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with injury, their reward is with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (2:261-262)

“Believe in Allah and His Messenger and spend out of that in which He has made you successors. For those who have believed among you and spent, there will be a great reward.” (57:7)

There’s even a special door to Jannah called ‘Al-Sadaqah’, and it’s reserved solely for those who used to give to Sadaqah in Dunya (Bukhari and Muslim).

Difference Between Lillah and Zakat

Zakat is the third Pillar of Islam. It has its terms, conditions and obligations. Zakat is an obligatory annual payment due to every Muslim. And Muslims must donate their Zakat money, under its specific time and conditions.

However, Lillah is an entirely voluntary charity, given at any time of the year to please Allah SWT. Any amount can be given.

Unlike Zakat, which has several stipulations regarding the type of assistance it can provide, Lillah can be used for any project or program that benefits people and/or Islamic institutions.

Lillah is given for an intention you make and ask Allah (SWT) to grace you with His Generosity and give it to you, like; when you give Lillah to help treat someone’s illness, or to make your job better, or to ask for forgiveness from Allah for something you did.
