Causes of Poverty in Yemen

Poverty is a complex issue with many causes. Some experts believe that the cause of poverty in Yemen is:

  • Lack of jobs.
  • High unemployment rates.
  • High growth rates and an increase in the number of employees.

Other reasons contribute to the high poverty rates in Yemen, such as corruption. Corruption is rampant at all levels, from government officials to business people making their way through life. It is also difficult for people who want to start their businesses because they need capital that they do not have.

After the Arab Spring, Yemen was left in shambles. The economy has been destroyed, and many people live in poverty.

Food Assistance and Nutrition assistance

Food assistance in Yemen is a humanitarian crisis that is an ongoing issue. The main cause of this crisis is the blockade on food imports, which has led to famine, malnutrition, and starvation.

Many people cannot afford food due to high prices and unemployment rates. This has caused people to eat leaves, animal feed, and even garbage as they cannot afford anything else.

The UN estimates that over 2 million children are at risk of starvation.

The country has been experiencing a cholera epidemic, which has killed more than 2,000 people. The United Nations has estimated that more than 7 million people are food insecure, and approximately 17 million people in Yemen need humanitarian assistance.

Food and nutrition assistance is needed for the Yemeni citizens who are displaced by the ongoing conflict, are on the verge of starvation, or have no other means to feed themselves.

This assistance can be provided in various ways like;

  • Providing money for food purchases.
  • Distributing food directly to those who need it most.
