About International Day of Education

Education is a fundamental human right, a public benefit, and a responsibility.

Recognizing the importance of education for world peace and development, the United Nations General Assembly declared 24 January the International Day of Education.

Countries will not succeed in attaining gender equality and ending the cycle of poverty that excludes millions of children, youth, and adults without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all.

Less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa finish lower secondary school, more than 258 million children and youth still do not attend school, 617 million children and adolescents remain illiterate, and four million children and youth who are refugees are not in school. It is outrageous that their right to an education is being infringed upon.

Education and Sustainable Development

The education sector’s reaction to UNESCO to the planet’s pressing and serious problems is called education for sustainable development (ESD). Because changes are becoming harder to undo every day due to human activity as a whole, our very survival appears to be in jeopardy. It takes a comprehensive approach to address environmental, social, and economic challenges if we are to stop global warming before it reaches catastrophic proportions.

ESD equips students of all ages with the knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and agency they need to tackle issues including climate change, biodiversity loss, unequal distribution of resources, and inequality. It equips students of all ages to make wise choices and take individual and group activities to improve society and protect the environment. ESD is a component of high-quality education and a process of lifelong learning. It includes learning outcomes, pedagogy, and the learning environment and improves the cognitive, socioemotional, and behavioral aspects of learning.

7.9 million of the 20.7 million refugees in our care are kids old enough to attend school. Nearly half of them cannot participate in school, severely restricting their access to education.

Due to the absence of schools in the residences, they have refugee camps.

Refugees often do not study since they do not have access to education.
