In Ramadan, the month of mercy and forgiveness, some may miss fasts for various reasons. To atone for this, Allah has ordained the payment of kaffarah.
What is Kaffarah for Missed Fasts and How Does it Differ from Fidya?
Kaffarah for missed fasts is an obligation for a Muslim who breaks their fast during Ramadan without a valid excuse. It can be fulfilled by feeding a needy person, fasting for two consecutive months, or freeing a slave. Kaffarah differs from Fidya in that Fidya is obligatory for those who are unable to fast due to old age or incurable illness, and it is fulfilled by feeding a needy person for each day missed. Kaffarah, on the other hand, is for those who miss fasts in Ramadan without a valid excuse.
Who is Obligated to Pay Kaffarah for Missed Fasts?
Kaffarah for missed fasts is obligatory for every adult Muslim of sound mind who misses fasts during Ramadan without a valid excuse and is unable to make up for the missed days before the next Ramadan.
The Amount of Kaffarah for Missed Fasts
- Kaffarah for General Missed Fasts: For each missed fast, one must feed a needy person with half a Sa’ (approximately 1.5 kilograms) of staple food, such as dates or the common food of the local community. This kaffarah can be fulfilled with a donation of $5 to feed one person.
- Kaffarah for Missed Fasts Due to Intimacy:
- Freeing a slave. If unable, then fasting for two consecutive months. If unable, then feeding sixty needy people.
- Since freeing a slave is not applicable in our time, one starts with fasting. If unable, then feeding the needy.
