What is Zakat on Gold?

Zakat on gold refers to the annual obligatory payment made on gold that is owned by a Muslim above a certain threshold (known as the nisab).

This includes:

  1. Gold jewelry
  2. Gold bars
  3. Gold coins

Who is Eligible to Pay Zakat on Gold?

A Muslim is obligated to pay Zakat on gold if they meet the following conditions:

  • They are an adult and of sound mind.
  • They possess gold above the nisab for a complete lunar year.
  • The gold is in their possession and control.
  • The gold is not being used for personal use (e.g., wearing gold jewelry).

Calculating Zakat on Gold

The nisab for Zakat on gold is 85 grams of pure gold. If a Muslim owns 85 grams of gold or more, they are required to pay 2.5% of the total value of their gold as Zakat.
