The Educational Crisis in Syria: A Fractured Landscape

Syria’s educational system stands at a critical juncture, profoundly reshaped by over a decade of conflict that concluded with the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024.

The systemic devastation has led to widespread infrastructural destruction, leaving millions of children out of school and exacerbating a severe shortage of qualified educators.

The key challenges include:

Infrastructural Devastation

Nearly 50 percent of Syria’s schools have been destroyed or severely damaged. Over 7,000 schools were damaged or destroyed by fighting, particularly in heavily affected areas like Aleppo, Idlib, and Daraa.

Many existing school buildings lack fundamental amenities, such as solid roofs, functional windows or doors, and sufficient seating. The pervasive lack of electricity further impedes learning processes.

Barriers to Access

Over 2.4 million children are currently out of school, with an additional million at risk of dropping out. Some estimates suggest 2.5 million out of 4.761 million school-age children are not attending school.

Massive displacement, with over 7.4 million Syrians internally displaced and an additional 5.6 million seeking refuge abroad, has effectively cut off millions of children and teachers from educational opportunities.

Financial constraints and worsening socio-economic conditions compel families to deprioritize schooling, leading to negative coping mechanisms such as child labor and early marriage.

Deterioration of Quality

The quality of education has plummeted significantly. Classrooms are frequently overcrowded, with some reports indicating an average of 50 students of varying ages and levels being taught by a single teacher. The “brain drain” has severely depleted human resources, with many qualified academics and teachers fleeing the country.

This has necessitated the recruitment of temporary teachers who frequently lack formal qualifications or adequate training.

Bonyan’s Commitment: Rebuilding Through Education

Bonyan recognizes that rebuilding Syria’s education system transcends mere infrastructural repair; it is about offering a vital opportunity for a generation profoundly affected by conflict to reconstruct their lives and secure a more promising future for the nation.

Our campaign is dedicated to addressing the multi-faceted challenges facing Syrian children by providing access to vibrant, structured education programs that restore childhood joy, spark curiosity, and pave the way to a peaceful future.

Our strategic initiatives include:

Establishing Safe Learning Environments

We create safe, structured academies in newly stable areas to nurture students with strong minds and open hearts. Our learning centers are designed to feel like second homes, places where children can be themselves, make friends, and discover their talents.

Holistic Educational Approach

Alongside traditional education, students enjoy:

  1. Sports and games to build teamwork, focus, and confidence.
  2. Group activities that strengthen social skills and emotional resilience.
  3. Creative outlets like storytelling, drawing, and performance that heal trauma through expression.

We are planting seeds of literacy, discipline, kindness, and critical thinking—tools that help defeat ignorance and build a healthier, more resilient Syria.

Addressing the “Lost Generation”

We provide comprehensive support, including books, uniforms, and supplies. We also focus on capacity building and psychosocial support for teachers, recognizing their crucial role in enhancing teaching quality.

Empowering Local Educators

We hire local Syrian teachers who know their students’ culture, language, and needs. Investing in the teaching profession is paramount, ensuring job stability, fair wages, and continuous professional development opportunities.

Bonyan’s approach emphasizes a transition towards “early recovery” and “sustainable development,” recognizing that short-term, emergency-focused funding is insufficient for the systemic rehabilitation required to rebuild the education sector.
